vertigo assessment

Vertigo involves feeling like you’re spinning or off-balance when you’re not. Most commonly, vertigo is caused by issues with the inner ear, where structures and nerves detect our body’s position. Conditions such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis, migraines, and low blood pressure can also cause feelings of dizziness and vertigo.

For vertigo, our physiotherapists start with a comprehensive assessment tailored to the individual. This involves:

  • Reviewing the patient’s medical history. Details including discussing the onset of dizziness, the frequency, and intensity.
  • Checking the individual’s stability and balance.
  • Assessing the individual’s cervical spine functionality.
  • Examining positional changes and eye movement.

Vertigo is commonly described with symptoms related to:

✅ Dizziness
✅ Tilting
✅ Swaying
✅ Unbalanced

These symptoms may vary in duration, lasting minutes or even hours. Other associated symptoms also include nausea, vomiting, abnormal eye movements, and headaches.
